So when Jeff and I went on our vacation to Oregon in the fall, everyone told us about OMSI (plus they had a sub that you could tour) so we wanted to check it out. After an afternoon there we couldn't wait to come back with the kids!
There is a cafe there called the "Theory Cafe" Can you say excellent food!!!! If you can't see Jeff's dish, we got Indian, and the kids got yummy grilled cheese!Reed lighting up a light bulb
They got to make rubbings of dinosaurs
Then they got to play in the sand and water...
Look at the town Reed and Dani built!
(sorry I don't know why some of these got so out of order)
This was a microscope that you could use to look at clothes fibers, or skin, or all kinds of things that you normally can't put under a microscope! Reed LOVED it!
They had lizards, and walking sticks, turtles and a rat!
Then in the next room, they had all kinds of things, this was a stage you could act out the life of a meerkat. They also had a showcase of the stages of a baby from 28 days all the way to 39 weeks (I think). Marian was fascinated by it, she had to look at it twice!
Here is the sub, we didn't go on it today though
The Willamette River
This blew air out the top there and they had paper cups you could cut up and see how different shapes and cuts would make things fly differently
In this one, the center wheel was spinning, you had to get the colored wheels to stay upright on the spinning wheel. It's tough, but Reed did get it once!
The earthquake house... it simulates what it feels like to be in 2 different sizes of earthquakes. After they had ridden out a couple of them Reed said, "this can't be what an earthquake is like!" I think he was greatly relived!
Next you got to build sail boats and race them in the water
There was a wind turbine that was always blowing, all you had to do was but you boat at one end and watch it go!
Next to it you could build paddle boats...
I think out of all the places we went to that day, they spent the most time in the water with the boats!
This one was one of my favorites last time we were here. You connect the pipes, and can turn valves on and off to fill up the water tank, it's pretty fun to play with
Then they had a crane that was kid sized, with little blocks they could practice moving around
Someone started to get a little bossy (she would have made the perfect foremen.)
A balancing act
Portland (a view from an OMSI window)
there were little balls that you had to get spinning with Dani, and Marian found the nano magnets fascinating!
More of Portland on the Willamette...
Thermal scaner!
More fun with water...
Dani was trying to build an earthquake proof house (sort of)
